The Reston Day School Oxford Tutorial

Oxford University, in Oxford, England (not far from Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare) is made up of over forty colleges.  Historically, the "Tutorial" has been the primary teaching format at Oxford.  A "Tutorial" consists of meetings between a "tutor" or a "don" and a very small number of students...usually one to three at a time.  The tutorial is an ongoing discussion between the tutor and students about whatever is being studied.  The tutor gives the assignments and there is much field work (research in the real world, field trips).

The Reston Day School Oxford Tutorial Program

The Oxford Tutorial Program at Reston Day School is a teacher's privilege and a student's dream!  It is designed to stimulate our student's interest in various subjects and allows a one-to-one relationship with the various teachers each student will have.

A critical element of the Oxford Tutorial is the quality, character, enthusiasm and integrity of our teachers and guest tutors.

The RDS Oxford Tutorial lends itself perfectly to teaching a multitude of skills including leadership skills and is structured as follows:

*  Each student is tested at the beginning of the year to determine his or her current academic level in the fundamental areas.  From there, each student has an individualized program developed so that he or she progresses at his or her own rate of learning, not a pre-determined "grade" level.

*   We have two tutors in the classroom at all times.

*   We borrow "guest" tutors from anywhere in our body of excellent and highly trained teachers, parents, nearby schools, universities, art galleries, museums, geographical or historical societies, etc.  They come to us or we travel to them.

*  There is a "vertical" and a "horizontal" aspect to the tutorial program for each student.  The "horizontal program" includes traditional, every day, every week, every year, critical and important academic subjects including, but not limited to:  reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, grammar, art, music and sports.

*   The "vertical program" is a series of quick, never longer than one month studies where the sky is the limit with regard to subjects covered. We study anything and everything including History, Anthropology, Archeology, Great Artists...always a new challenge!  The purpose of the vertical program is to keep the students' interest piqued and to put academic skills learned in the "horizontal program" to real world use.
